A recent poll shows that twice as many Americans think things are getting worse than those who think things are improving. If you read the news, or follow this blog, you have surely heard that the world is in crisis. Under the crossfire ambush of a burgeoning population, environmental deterioration, and increasing armaments, terrorism and tension, it is easy to surmise that the world is going to hell in a hand-basket. At the same time, we could look at some other statistics which signal that the last half century has produced some of the greatest improvements in human history. Here are some facts, taken mostly from recent N.Y. Times stories, including a brilliant piece by Nicholas Kristof entitled “The Best News You Don’t Know”:
- Over the last 35 years the number of people living in extreme poverty has dropped from 44% of the world population to 10%
- In the last two decades the mortality rates for small children has dropped 50%
- The literacy rate of the human population has more than quadrupled in the last 50 years
- Although income inequality is increasing in the U.S., it is actually declining in many developing nations, including India and China
- And even if most Americans don’t think things are getting better, 3.5 million U.S. citizens moved out of the poverty level in the last year
- The U.S. economy is creating 3 million new jobs per year
- The U.S. stock market has more than tripled in the last 7 years
- Mortgage interest rates for aspiring home-buyers remain at nearly all-time lows

Thank you, Emmanuel. I have struggled with the negative spin that has divided so many of us with this election. I am angry at people who "can't see it my way" because it seems so clear. I get emotional when talking with those who are so negative about our country. Thank you for taking the time to show the positive. It's a much better focus for me.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts about the negative spin, Carolyn. I think we are all frustrated with the direction things have taken. Hopefully somebody will be offering some intensive programs in Post Traumatic Election Disorder :) Short of that, I plan to keep on writing and focusing on the many positive aspects we can build on from this experience. It does seem like the entire country, maybe the world, could benefit from some anger management counseling. On this blog, we might explore the divine feminine rising as well. Stay tuned.
